The Truth About Heart Disease And The Importance Of A Healthy Lifestyle Versus Great Genetics!

It only makes sense that if heart disease is the “number one killer” that we ALL should be interested in doing something about it.

Right?

What if I told you that nearly 80% of all heart disease is preventable?!?

I imagine a good number of you are saying; “What did you just say?”.

THE MAJORITY OF HEART DISEASE IS PREVENTABLE!  (Sorry, it doesn’t come down to good or bad genetics)

Cardiovascular Disease Does NOT Need To Be The Number One Killer Of Men And Women In The United States! Honestly, it’s a shame!!!

Well, if you have been following me at “The Get Healthy Club,” “The Healthy Omnivore” and even here at “The Get Healthy Hub” you know this to be TRUE!

Honestly, I hope this isn’t the first time that someone is telling you that in the majority of cases it can be said that “we” are solely responsible for the quality of our health.

Yes, it is true that a “healthy lifestyle” is the primary factor when it comes to your cardiovascular health.

The Mayo Clinic now has a very simple program that will help “move” you in the right direction when it comes to the health of cardiovascular system.

Now I will tell you, these recommendations are not complicated, but just four simple steps to attaining and retaining a high quality of cardiovascular health.

#1:  Eat 5 or more vegetables or fruits per day. It’s not just the protective nutrients they supply, but also that you’ll have less room for junk.

Personally, we teach that “fibrous” vegetables are the most important for your overall health as fruit does contain the simple sugar fructose.  But please look at the additional reason to increase your fibrous vegetable intake; “you’ll have less room for junk”.  Yes, “eating” as a “hunter-gatherer” gives you no chance to consume “fast,” “convenient” and/or “junk” foods!

#2:  Move 10 extra minutes each day. Recent studies show that a sedentary lifestyle may increase your risk of heart attack as much as smoking does. It’s as simple as standing instead of sitting as much as possible.

I always stress the importance of understanding the challenges that the “Technology Era” puts on our overall health.  In matter of fact, I am such a big fan of “moving” like a “hunter-gatherer” that I am actually STANDING as I am typing up this post.  Quite simply, we need to move daily, and hopefully that everyday movement will turn into a “safe and effective” exercise regimen!

#3:  Sleep at least 8 hours per day. Chronic sleep deprivation has devastating effects on your heart. It is not a luxury, it’s a necessity.

Most people underestimate the value of a “high quality” sleep regimen.  The truth of the matter is that you can’t get away from the degenerative process to the human body if you don’t allow the body to heal/recover/recuperate while sleeping!  And obviously, a good nights sleep is absolutely free!

#4:  In addition, enjoy life. Discover what brings you joy and satisfaction. Your mental and emotional state influence heart health just as your genetic makeup and lifestyle habits can.

See the entire article HERE.

Clearly it must be noted that we are much more than just “physical” beings.  If you don’t prioritize your “mental” and “emotional” health now, you will be greatly reducing your cardiovascular health in the future!

I can’t stress enough how important it is to prioritize a healthy lifestyle.  There has been FAR TOO MUCH misinformation regarding the role of genetics on our health.

My major concern with this approach to “health care” is that takes the responsibility of “our” health and puts it in the hands of those producing the DRUGS and doing the PROCEDURES.

I don’t buy it and you shouldn’t either.

When it comes to degenerative and chronic health problems, the “truth is in the pudding,” and in 3/4 of all cases, we are the responsible party.  Yes, these diseases can be prevented, but you need to have a proper nutrition regimen, an safe and effective exercise regimen and a healthy lifestyle.

It isn’t really that difficult, but there is work to be done…

At “The Get Healthy Club” we work hard to create an environment for the human body to attain optimal health.

If you would like to know how to eat, exercise and even live to increase the quality and quantity of your life.  Please let me know!

Are Prescription Drugs As Safe As You Have Been Led To Believe?

It seems more and more I am hearing that doctors are saying that the prescription drugs that they are prescribing have NO side effects.

Hmmm.

Thinking out loud:  “Shouldn’t the doctors be on OUR side?“.

Is that even possible?  Actually, “side effect” is probably the improper term, because a side effect can actually be beneficial as well as detrimental.

We are talking about “legal” drugs being detrimental to your health within this post.

So, Western Medicine doctors study “Toxicology” (root word:  toxin) and then come up with the conclusion that you can consume these toxins with no side effects (good or bad).  Interesting.

“Adverse Drug Reactions” are very real! Please… be informed!

I have to wonder if there is some type of “Pharmaceutical Company” slant there.  ;)  ;)

Somewhere Hippocrates is rolling over in his grave.  I just can’t see “do no harm” in this approach to medicine.

In matter of fact, the whole approach of pharmaceutical drugs within Allopathic Medicine is pretty disgusting.

Have you ever heard of “Adverse Drug Reactions”?  Because this is the term that your doctor is getting to when they say, “no side effects.”

Well, this is what Wiki has to say about the term “Adverse Drug Reaction”:   An expression that describes harm associated with the use of given medications at a normal dosage during normal use. ADRs may occur following a single dose or prolonged administration of a drug or result from the combination of two or more drugs.

I hope you noticed the phrases; “normal dosage during normal use” and “prolonged administration of a drug or result from the combination of two or more drugs.”

Yes, these drugs that are creating “harm” and “death” are not only legal but they are hugely detrimental while taken properly.

It gets worse…

In the following link (Medical Errors) you will find the following information regarding adverse drug reactions and the impact they are having on our health:

According to information we have received, a statistical study of hospital deaths in the U.S. conducted at the University of Toronto revealed that pharmaceutical drugs kill more people every year than are killed in traffic accidents.

The study is said to show that more than two million American hospitalized patients suffered a serious adverse drug reaction (ADR) within the 12-month period of the study and, of these, over 100,000 died as a result. The researchers found that over 75 per cent of these ADRs were dose-dependent, which suggests they were due to the inherent toxicity of the drugs rather than to allergic reactions.

The data did not include fatal reactions caused by accidental overdoses or errors in administration of the drugs. If these had been included, it is estimated that another 100,000 deaths would be added to the total every year.

The researchers concluded that ADRs are now the fourth leading cause of death in the United States after heart disease, cancer, and stroke.

LINK:  Prescription Drugs-Leading Killer In The United States

Ugh!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but who would have ever thought that a serious drug reaction would be the fourth leading cause of death in the United States?

Sure, people concern themselves with the following “Big Three”:

1.  Heart Disease

2.  Cancer

3.  Stroke

But…

4.  Adverse Drug Reactions

Plus, the media can’t be enough about “Heart Disease” and even “Cancer,” but when was the last time you heard or saw anything of value on how detrimental prescription drugs can be on your health?  Well, there is good reason for that…

The reason for this is simple.

Pharmaceutical Drug Companies “sponsor” a big percentage of what is going on in media.  Most television today is INUNDATED with Prescription Drug Commercials.

Please, don’t be fooled!

Don’t believe me?

Watch 30 minutes of one of the top rated shows in the morning and tell me what you see?  You got it.  It’s going to be all about “selling drugs.”  Of course, we might “giggle” at the “Disclaimer” but it really is NO laughing matter!

Trust me, these ads are misleading, don’t comply with the FDA and certainly DO NOT give you the accurate information that you will need to make an informed decision.

So, here is my suggestion to you.

Please, do not go on ANY drug regimen without doing your due diligence.

Get second and third opinions.

Look into “Complementary Medicine” as an option.

But you must know this… Adverse Drug Reactions are real, so no the facts before you embark on any prescription drug regimen.

Ask your doctor if there is any way to be weaned off a specific drug (You CANNOT quit taking any drug without a doctor’s approval!).

Ask your doctor is they can give you a drug with less negative side effects.

Look, the choice is yours, but you need to be informed.

At “The Get Healthy Club” we work hard to create an environment for the human body to attain optimal health.

If you would like to know how to eat, exercise and even live to increase the quality and quantity of your life.  Please let me know!

What Is The Number Three Killer In The United States? You Might Be Surprised!

Let me ask you a very simple question.

Where do you feel safest?

A.  Driving on the highway

B.  Seeing your family doctor or physician

If a visit to your doctor makes you feel all “warm and fuzzy,” I have bad news!

What are you more likely to die from?

A.  Breast Cancer

B.  Aids

C.  Medical Errors

Here is a tip.  Staying healthy and steering clear of your doctor and the hospital is easily your best bet!

Far too many people are blaming their poor health on their parents or poor genes. Please, don’t believe it! In most cases the state of your health is directly related to how you eat, move and live!

You may be asking, “what in the world are you talking about?”.

Great Question.

Let’s get to it…

Have you ever heard of the term “iatrogenesis”?

Well, here is what Wiki has to say about Iatrogenesis:

An inadvertent adverse effect or complication resulting from medical treatment or advice, including that of psychologists, therapists, pharmacists, nurses, physicians, and dentists. Iatrogenesis is not restricted to conventional medicine; it can also result from complementary and alternative medicine treatments.

And yes, the numbers are much greater than you would have ever believed:

In the United States an estimated 225,000 deaths per year have iatrogenic causes, with only heart disease and cancer causing more deaths.

It’s true… ONLY heart disease AND cancer cause more deaths.  Ouch!

It’s true, these ERRORS are much more prevalent than you might have thought and is shouldn’t be acceptable.

But, it is, so we suggest you get yourself as healthy as possible and stay as healthy as possible!  It is the best way to steer clear of ALL of these errors.

That is why we at “The Get Healthy Hub,” “The Healthy Omnivore,” and “The Get Healthy Club” urge people to take responsibility of their OWN health so they don’t have to endure the opportunity of the “Iatrogenesis Artifact” to actually take your life!

More and more I am hearing of people going to the hospital for one symptom and dieing a few months later from some type of infection (i.e. Staphylococcus) that had absolutely NOTHING to do with the reason for their original hospital visit.

This is truly unfortunate indeed.

At this point, you might be in shock and be wondering exactly what I am talking about…

Well, it turns out that Medical Errors are the THIRD leading cause of death in the United States.

The JOURNAL of the AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION (JAMA) Vol 284, No 4, July 26th 2000 article written by Dr Barbara Starfield, MD, MPH, of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, shows that medical errors may be the third leading cause of death in the United States.

The report apparently shows there are 2,000 deaths/year from unnecessary surgery; 7000 deaths/year from medication errors in hospitals; 20,000 deaths/year from other errors in hospitals; 80,000 deaths/year from infections in hospitals; 106,000 deaths/year from non-error, adverse effects of medications – these total up to 225,000 deaths per year in the US from iatrogenic causes which ranks these deaths as the # 3 killer. Iatrogenic is a term used when a patient dies as a direct result of treatments by a physician, whether it is from misdiagnosis of the ailment or from adverse drug reactions used to treat the illness. Drug reactions are the most common cause.

You see, the best medicine is PREVENTION.

Yes, get healthy and stay healthy!

Look, this information is from the Journal Of The American Medical Association, so this is isn’t “hack” information.  You need to take it seriously!

Maybe this statistic will give you more perspective on the situation:

Number of physicians in the U.S……………………………………700,000
Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year…………….120,000

This information was sent to us indicating that it came from the Benton County News Tribune on the seventeenth of November, 1999

The quotes above came from this LINK.

A proper nutritional and exercise regimen combined with a healthy lifestyle will move you towards optimal health and will help greatly reduce the opportunity for any of the above errors to take your life. [Read more...]

Supporting Farmer’s Markets is an ALL YEAR Endeavor… But Your Health Is Worth It!

You know me, all about supporting local small farmers!

So, I wanted to “remind” all of my readers and followers of the importance of getting behind eating locally and seasonally and NOT supporting BIG FOOD.

I just came across a nice little post entitled “10 Reasons To Support Farmer’s Markets All Year Long” and I wanted to share some of the highlights with you.

Do You Know Where And How To Find The Best Food Available?

Support your local small farmers at a Farmer’s Market in your area!

Plus, I wanted to introduce you to the term “Agtivist,” which I thought was kind of clever.  :)  Obviously the author is talking about being an “activist” within the “agriculture” industry, so it is pretty clear what the word is meant to mean.  My spell check didn’t like it though.  ;)  If you are interested in your “food freedom,” you might want to check out the movie entitled THE AGTIVISTS.

Here are a few points that I want to make about Farmer’s Markets:

Farmer’s Markets, and YOUR health, are not about convenience.  The days of thinking that “fast” food and “convenience” food as far as your nutritional regimen is concerned have nothing to do with improving your health.

Nothing!

But, by making a simple effort on a weekly basis you can greatly improve the quality of food in your home and on your plate.

Local farmers don’t take the winter off. They’re out in the cold planting and harvesting. If they can do that 365 days a year, we can take one day a week to go out in the cold to support them.

Pay a little more and support who matters!

Why not put your hard earned money into the pockets of those who are producing the best food available?  By the time you purchase a product at your favorite “chain” grocery store, think about how little the farmer is receiving and how much the “middle men” are bringing in for profit.

Let’s be honest here, how high can the quality be for these MASS produced foods?

Think “Farm To Table” and you will be fine!

Farming is hard. I grew up on a farm. My grandparents and dad and his siblings did backbreaking work everyday just to live in a shack to feed themselves and others. There is no easy ride in farming and for that alone we should support them because without them, there’s no food!

And, think about the ability to talk to your local farmers.  You now, actually “pick their brain” about their product!

This is the one thing that I really, really miss about moving away from Texas and not being able to partake of some of the best Farmer’s Markets in the country.

I really looked forward to seeing and “chatting up” the farmers who provided me with amazing eggs, poultry, beef, pork, and lamb on a weekly basis.  And, let’s not forget about produce as well!

Social time. I’ve grown special relationships with my farmers. Seeing them every Saturday and asking about their farms and families is a highlight of my week. I use it as a chance to get out of the house and visit with friends.

You can find the rest of the article HERE

So, let me give you the challenge of visiting one of your local farmer’s markets.

To me, it is a “win-win” situation, and there are not many of those around anymore.

Brain Fog? Dump The Drugs And Supplements And Just Start Exercising!

As a health and fitness professional I work diligently on “discovering and deciphering” the very latest in scientific research.

And, as I have mentioned numerous times, I am always on the “look out” for misinformation that will lead my followers and clients astray!

Unfortunately, this is much more difficult that one might think.

Let’s be honest…

The MONEY is all on the side of the BIG GROUPS (with HUGE corporate interests); BIG FOOD, BIG PHARMA and even BIG AGRICULTURE! (and not you being healthy!)

I am pretty tired of the “doom and gloom” approach to our health in the United States!

I am confident in saying that without the “propaganda” models created by BIG food, pharma and agriculture, that our health would NOT be the worst of any of “developed and industrial” countries in the world.

To be fair, some of what is going on within the food, drug and agriculture industries should be considered illegal, and it is certainly unethical!

And think of it… all at the expense of our health.

Brutal!

What am I saying?

Most people receive their health information via ADVERTISING and MARKETING campaigns.

And though, there may be a glimmer of truth in these campaigns, the majority of the information gleaned from most corporate and advertising programs is truly deceptive.

There is good new though!

The truth is that the MAJORITY of us can live a high quality of life with proper nutrition and exercise, plus a healthy lifestyle.

For example:

  • How is your brain working these days?
  • How is your mental acuity?
  • Are you as “cognitive” as you once were?

If you are having challenges, have you already begun taking supplements, over the counter drugs or even prescription drugs to deal with the problem?

When in the world did the quality of our health come down to profit margins, shareholders, and lobbyists?

Did you try to modify your nutritional regimen before “jumping the gun” and start relying on some supplement or  worse yet, some drug?

Why?

Achieve Optimal Health With A Proper Mental Attitude

Looking to improve your “brain activity”? Exercise will be a better option than “this,” as well as supplementation and drugs!

What about exercise?  Do you understand the benefits that come with exercising when it comes to brain health?

Part of the reason exercise enhances cognition has to do with blood flow. Research shows that when we exercise, blood pressure and blood flow increase everywhere in the body, including the brain. More blood means more energy and oxygen, which makes our brain perform better.

This isn’t “brain surgery” people.  It is really pretty simple.

Don’t you think your productivity at work, or even your child’s results at school could benefit from an improved exercise regimen?

Yet another study found that students who exercise perform better on tests than their less athletic peers.  See the entire article HERE

Duh, right?

In a great book, entitle “Brain Rules,” the author recommends having children wearing gym clothes to school and exercising throughout the day.  By doing this, the brain would never become inactive and the child’s results would be greatly improved!

Duh, right?

Let alone all of the other improvements exercising 20 minutes 3 times a day would have on your child, as well as you!

Look, the majority of us should be healthy (most diseases are not genetic, but created because of a poor lifestyle).

We should be having a high quality of life far into our senior years (sorry, not talking about high school here).

Please, don’t believe the hype produced by the propaganda models of BIG INDUSTRY and their corporate influence (remember, all marketers are liars?).  You, and we, can do better!

Seriously, are you eating, moving and living in a manner that will reap benefits to your health and fitness levels.  If not, why?

Do you really believe that a supplement or worse yet, a drug is going to magically make  everything better?

Hmmm.

Something to think about!

Get Healthy Tip #28: Three Push-Up “No-No’s” and What You Can Do To Receive GREATER Results!

More and more people are becoming involved with “Cross Fit” and “Boot Camp” types (i.e. Group) of training.

Fine.

But, not at the expense of “poor” or “improper” technique!

Hey, it is difficult enough train proper mechanics to one client, but to really safely and effectively train groups of people you MUST have your crap together.

Unfortunately, it seems that the people who are training “groups” of people have less knowledge, wisdom and experience than the “professionals” that are doing the “one-on-one” training.

Sad.

This is backwards!

3 POOR PUSH-UP TECHNIQUES

When it comes to the push-up, here is what I am seeing is being allowed:

  1. Horrendous Hand Placement
  2. The “Head Bob”
  3. The “Hip Thrust”

Please take a look at the short video below and see what I have to say about these three unfortunate approaches to the push-up.

Also, listen to what I say about what you can do, plus the introduction of the concept of “Resisted Range Of Motion.”

Please watch now!

COMMON PUSH-UP MISTAKES

Get Healthy Tip #27: Are you doing “Functional Training”? Is it right for you?

At this stage of the game, I am certain that you have at least heard of “Cross-Fit” and/or “Boot Camp” training.

But, do we really need to train in this fashion to attain optimal health?

I would suggest that all of us need to be able to do three primary movements.

By focusing on these three “basic” movements not only will we be improving our overall strength and endurance, but our posture and flexibility as well

Please, do NOT over-train.  There is no reason to sabotage your “health” results just to attain some level of “fitness.”

Do these basic moves throughout the week and work on gradually improving day to day and week to week.  Within a few months you will be amazed at how much strength, endurance and flexibility you have gained!

Functional Training

Remember, prioritize “big” movements that work the largest muscle groups in the body!

For starters I recommend:

SQUATTING:  Full body squats and pulse lunges!

PUSHING:  An assortment of push ups!

PULLING:  Rows and assisted pull ups!

Get Healthy Tip #25: The Side Warrior Pose!

As stated in last week’s “Get Healthy Tip,” one thing that I like to do when creating a proper exercise regimen is to “safely and effectively” challenge people in a number of ways.

One approach is to add “beneficial” and “practical” yoga moves!

Why?

Well, if you are already doing some weight bearing exercises and some of them are moderate to high impact, adding a few properly selected yoga poses can be of great benefit.

Variety is good, though in many cases overrated, but can be integral in reaching a number of goals and keeping a workout fresh!

The “Side Warrior Pose” is great for lower body strength and endurance and wonderful for improving posture.

Interested in stress relief? It will benefit you in that area as well.

The Side Warrior Pose

Remember, be safe and do NOT push yourself to hard initially!

Plus, yoga gives you another opportunity to work on your breathing skills.

For starters I recommend:

Beginners: 3 Breaths

Intermediate: 5 Breaths

Advanced: 10 Breaths

Get Healthy Tip #24: The Front Warrior Pose!

One thing that I like to do when it comes to creating an exercise regimen that will create amazing results is to challenge people in a number of ways.

One simple, but not necessarily easy way to do this is to add “Yoga Poses” to your day-to-day exercise program.

Why?

Well, if you are already doing some weight bearing exercises and some of them are moderate to high impact, adding a few properly selected yoga poses can be of great benefit.

I am in no way what you would call a “Yogi,” and I have no desire to be one, but I do see the importance of adding some of these yoga moves to any proper exercise regimen to “balance out” any results oriented exercise program.

This pose is one that will help improve your posture, stress levels, core strength and your lower body endurance, amongst other things…

The Front Warrior Pose

Remember, work on your technique and don’t try to challenge yourself to quickly because you think “yoga” is easy. That would be a HUGE mistake!

Plus, yoga gives you another opportunity to work on your breathing skills.

Here you go:
