Is ALL Soy A Health Food?

Do you consume soy?  Do you realize the huge difference between fermented soy and unfermented soy?  Have you ever thought about how much soy is genetically modified?

And… let’s be honest, have your ever really asked yourself this question:  “Is ALL Soy A Health Food?”

Well, if you have followed THE HEALTHY OMNIVORE or THE GET HEALTHY HUB for any amount of time you realize that “NO,” ALL Soy is NOT a health food!

There are big differences between unfermented soy and fermented soy and the affect on your health.

We promote the intake of fermented soy, but we suggest to stay away from it’s evil brother “unfermented soy.”

Because in all actuality, one is beneficial to your health and the other is detrimental.

Is ALL Soy A Health Food?

Is ALL Soy A Health Food?

Is ALL Soy A Health Food? No, but there are some nice options!

Let’s dig in a little deeper.

You might be wondering, how in the world did unfermented soy products become so popular.  Well, over at Mercola.com, I found an excellent article that breaks it ALL down:

If it seems like soy foods appeared out of nowhere to be regarded as the “miracle health food” of the 21st Century, it’s because they did.

From 1992 to 2006, soy food sales increased from $300 million to nearly $4 billion, practically overnight, according to the Soyfoods Association of North America. This growth came about due to a massive shift in attitudes about soy. And this shift was no accident—it was the result of a massive investment in advertising by the soy industry that’s been wildly successful.

Soy is indeed big business, very big business.

From 2000 to 2007, U.S. food manufacturers introduced more than 2,700 new soy-based foods, and new soy products continue to appear on your grocer’s shelves.

According to the survey Consumer Attitudes About Nutrition 2008 (by the United Soybean Board):

  • As of 2007, 85 percent of consumers perceive soy products as healthful
  • 33 percent of Americans eat soy foods or beverages at least once a month
  • 70 percent of consumers believe soybean oil is good for them
  • 84 percent of consumers agree with the FDA’s claim that consuming 25 grams of soy protein daily reduces your risk of heart disease

This is a tragic case of shrewd marketing and outright lies taking root among the masses with the end result of producing large profits for the soy industry and impaired health for most who have been deceived into using unfermented soy long-term..

As you can see from the extensive list of articles below, there is a large amount of scientific research showing that soy is not the nutritional panacea of the 21st Century.

Wondering what some of the side effects of soy consumption might be?  Take a look:

  • Breast cancer
  • Brain damage
  • Infant abnormalities
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Kidney stones
  • Immune system impairment
  • Severe, potentially fatal food allergies
  • Impaired fertility
  • Danger during pregnancy and nursing

But practically speaking, why should you become overly discerning when it comes to soy consumption?

Here is a summary of soy’s most glaring problems.

  1. 91 percent of soy grown in the US is genetically modified (GM). The genetic modification is done to impart resistance to the toxic herbicide Roundup. While this is meant to increase farming efficiency and provide you with less expensive soy, the downside is that your soy is loaded with this toxic pesticide. The plants also contain genes from bacteria that produce a protein that has never been part of the human food supply.GM soy has been linked to an increase in allergies. Disturbingly, the onlypublished human feeding study on GM foods ever conducted verified that the gene inserted into GM soy transfers into the DNA of our gut bacteria and continues to function. This means that years after you stop eating GM soy, you may still have a potentially allergenic protein continuously being produced in your intestines.Even more frightening is the potential for GM soy to cause infertility in future generations, which has been evidenced by recent Russian research.
  2. Soy contains natural toxins known as “anti-nutrients.”Soy foods contain anti-nutritional factors such as saponins, soyatoxin, phytates, protease inhibitors, oxalates, goitrogens and estrogens. Some of these factors interfere with the enzymes you need to digest protein. While a small amount of anti-nutrients would not likely cause a problem, the amount of soy that many Americans are now eating is extremely high.
  3. Soy contains hemagglutinin.Hemagglutinin is a clot-promoting substance that causes your red blood cells to clump together. These clumped cells are unable to properly absorb and distribute oxygen to your tissues.
  4. Soy contains goitrogensGoitrogens are substances that block the synthesis of thyroid hormones and interfere with iodine metabolism, thereby interfering with your thyroid function.
  5. Soy contains phytates.Phytates (phytic acid) bind to metal ions, preventing the absorption of certain minerals, including calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc — all of which are co-factors for optimal biochemistry in your body. This is particularly problematic for vegetarians, because eating meat reduces the mineral-blocking effects of these phytates (so it is helpful—if you do eat soy—to also eat meat).
  6. Soy is loaded with the isoflavones genistein and daidzeinIsoflavones are a type of phytoestrogen, which is a plant compound resembling human estrogen. These compounds mimic and sometimes block the hormone estrogen, and have been found to have adverse effects on various human tissues. Soy phytoestrogens are known to disrupt endocrine function, may cause infertility, and may promote breast cancer in women.Drinking even two glasses of soymilk daily for one month provides enough of these compounds to alter your menstrual cycle. Although the FDA regulates estrogen-containing products, no warnings exist on soy.
  7. Soy has toxic levels of aluminum and manganeseSoybeans are processed (by acid washing) in aluminum tanks, which can leach high levels of aluminum into the final soy product. Soy formula has up to 80 times higher manganese than is found in human breast milk.
  8. Soy infant formula puts your baby’s health at risk.Nearly 20 percent of U.S. infants are now fed soy formula, but the estrogens in soy can irreversibly harm your baby’s sexual development and reproductive health. Infants fed soy formula take in an estimated five birth control pills’ worth of estrogen every day.Infants fed soy formula have up to 20,000 times the amount of estrogen in circulation as those fed other formulas!

There is also the issue of pesticides and genetic modification.

Soy foods are both heavily sprayed with pesticides and genetically modified (GM). More than 80 percent of the soy grown in the United States is GM. And more than 90 percent of American soy crops are GM.

Since the introduction of GM foods in 1996, we’ve had an upsurge in low birth weight babies, infertility, and other problems in the U.S. population, and animal studies thus far have shown devastating effects from consuming GM soy.

You may want to steer clear of soy products for no other reason than a commitment to avoiding GM foods… unless you wish to be a lab animal for this massive uncontrolled experiment by the biotech industry.

Okay, after all of that information, do you want to stay away from unfermented soy?

Here is a nice little list to help you do just that:

For a simple rule of thumb, just remember that unless soy is fermented (tempeh, miso, natto, or traditionally made soy sauce), you’re better off avoiding it.

Soy foods to avoid include:

Tofu

TVP (texturized vegetable protein) or soy protein isolate, which contains a large amount of msg, which you should definitely not consume

  • Soybean oil
  • Soymilk
  • Soy cheese, soy ice cream, soy yogurt
  • Soy “meat” (meatless products made of TVP)
  • Soy protein
  • Edamame
  • Soy infant formula

The best way to eliminate non-fermented soy from your diet is to avoid all processed foods and instead purchase whole foods that you prepare yourself.

You can find the entire article HERE

Another nice little tip given by Dr. Mercola is to ALWAYS be reading the ingredients on any packaged foods you may be consuming.  Hopefully you already know this, but after reading this article, you now have been reminded of the seriousness of the issue!

Plus, remember that soy can be found in lecithen (an emulsifier), colors, flavors, and spice blends, so once again, you MUST read the ingredients on any product that has already been pre-made.  I know I am being a tad bit redundant here, but there is HUGE money behind pushing the unfermented soy agenda, so when it comes to what you are putting in your body on a daily basis you MUST be aware at all times!

Look, it is clear that there is a huge difference between how fermented soy and unfermented soy affect your health.  Please, be careful!

Over at my membership health club I only recommend fermented soy products such as natto, tempeh, miso, and soy sauce.  Why?  Because NO food is neutral, and we have seen today that putting a supposedly “healthy” food in our body can have disastrous ramifications.

I realize that the “Soy” discussion has become somewhat controversial and in many cases “heated.”  I am not telling you to steer clear of ALL soy, but just unfermented soy.  I believe you can see why as the “proof is in the pudding.”

Get Healthy Tip #5: The Impact Of Individualized Nutrition On Your Health

As you know by now, the formula for attaining optimal health is as follows:

PROPER NUTRITION + PROPER EXERCISE + HEALTHY LIFESTYLE = OPTIMAL HEALTH

By now you realize that proper nutrition is number one, and rightfully so. But, what what exactly is proper nutrition?

Well, it is IMPOSSIBLE to be healthy if you don’t take your nutritional regimen seriously.

You see, the cumulative effects of a poor diet is literally a killer!

At “The Get Healthy Hub” we prioritize a few things when it comes to proper nutrition:

  1. High Quality Real Foods
  2. Proper Food Combinations
  3. Frequency Of Meals
  4. Caloric Intake

Within the steps of high quality real foods and proper food combinations comes the opportunity to understand what foods are best for you. You see, there is no such thing as a “cookie cutter,” “universal,” or even “one size fits all” diet.

What I am talking about is “Individualized Nutrition.”

You may have heard Individualized Nutrition called Metabolic Typing or even Nutritional Typing, but the point is that we ALL have our own Biochemical Individuality. This biochemical individuality is created by your very own genetic makeup and your environment.

This truth is very real… and it is overlooked by most “experts.”

And because of this uniqueness, we need to eat what is best for “us,” not what is best for someone else.

So, you want to be optimally healthy or well, you will want to understand the basics of Individualized Nutrition.

The short video below will better explain the importance of how Individualized Nutrition can help you reach the optimal health that you greatly deserve.

Take a look:

So, there you have it, “Health Tip #5″!

Now that you understand the three components of attaining optimal health we will begin to break down each one into smaller and more digestible pieces. This week you learned a basic concept from your Nutritionist about a healthy lifestyle.

Get Healthy Tip #3: The Need For Everyday Movement

As you remember, the formula for attaining optimal health is as follows:

PROPER NUTRITION + PROPER EXERCISE + HEALTHY LIFESTYLE = OPTIMAL HEALTH

By now you realize that proper nutrition is number one, and rightfully so. But, what does proper exercise entail?

Well, it isn’t training like the pros, or working out like your favorite model/athlete/personality, or even being obsessive/compulsive and burning calories like a crazy person.

You see, you will want to attain optimal health before you attain any sort of fitness level. And to do that, you will want to prioritize everyday movement.

Please, not put the cart before the horse!

What is everyday movement you ask?

  • Squatting
  • Pulling
  • Pushing
  • Lunging
  • Sprinting
  • Jumping
  • Crawling
  • Climbing

You don’t have to be crazy about it, but you should be able to do these things. And… if you can, you will have improved not only your strength and flexibility, but your physiques/figure as well.

Take a look:

PRIORITIZE EVERYDAY MOVEMENT

So, there you have it, “Health Tip #3″!

Now that you understand the three components of attaining optimal health we will begin to break down each one into smaller and more digestible pieces. This week you learned from your Personal Trainer a basic concept about proper exercise.

Remember, the “formula” for achieving optimal health might be simple, but the “process” is NOT exactly easy!

Stress Hormones And Childhood Obesity

If you have been following me for any amount of time here at “The Get Healthy Hub” or over at “The Healthy Omnivore” you know that I believe that the BEST way to rid ourselves of the Childhood Obesity Pandemic is to re-prioritize high quality real food.  People, we are malnourished while consuming thousands and thousands of calories MORE than we have any right to be consuming!

Yes, that means getting EVERYONE to prioritize high quality foods back into their lives.  EVERYONE!

I do not believe that exercising more will ever make up for a poor diet.  Ever.

A proper exercise program can complement a proper nutrition program, but it should NEVER replace it.  Start with proper nutrition, and then implement a proper exercise program.

But what about the stress hormones and childhood obesity?  Can we start blaming “bad” hormones on the childhood obesity pandemic?

No!

But, the way we live our lives does have a DIRECT impact on our “insulin” (anabolic hormone) and “cortisol” (stress hormone) levels which are PRIMARY hormones.  If these hormones are not working properly you will not function properly (feel like crap/look worse).  If you no longer produce these hormones, you will be dead.  That is why  they are primary!  (The sex hormones are SECONDARY hormones)

If your “insulin” and “cortisol” levels are not optimal you will begin to put on body fat and it will be very difficult to get it off.  Very difficult!

One reason that children are getting bigger and bigger is not only because of the amount of non-food (altered, convenient, fast, packaged, etc.) calories that perpetually surround them 24/7, but also the amount of chronic stress that they must now handle.

No one deals with chronic stress well.  Acute Stress?  Yes.  Chronic Stress?  No.

But, a lot of people deal with stress by eating.  Cortisol and Adrenaline will drop your blood sugar levels.  You will want to eat and you will want to eat a lot!  It just natural to want to get your blood sugar levels back up.

Unfortunately, when you eat low quality food that is of a high sugar nature you will cause blood sugar challenges that will create insulin challenges.

And you guessed it, you will now have low blo0d sugar again, and…

Yes, this cycle could be called the “Cycle Of Doom.”  We will just say that it is a primary reason that our children are becoming obese earlier and earlier.

Here is a nice short video to break it down in another way:

Stress Hormones And Childhood Obesity

Okay, so is telling everyone to just focus on the hormones insulin and cortisol going to stop the childhood obesity pandemic in its tracks?  NO!

Why?  People have known the impact of insulin and cortisol on their health for years and it has had very little effect.

To completely control your insulin and cortisol levels MOST people will greatly have to change the way they view their life and the way they view food.  This would be a GOOD thing!

So what should we (and the children) do?

1.  Eat High Quality Real Foods and Combine them in a way that keeps your insulin and blood sugar levels in check.

2.  Understand that within the Technology Era we are going to have to deal with Low Level Chronic Stress (it isn’t going away), so try to reduce it, AND do NOT deal with it by EATING!

3.  Work to optimize all of your hormones by living with a healthy lifestyle (i.e. exercise, sleep, sun, toxins, etc.).

And if you see the “Cycle Of Doom” destroying yours or your child’s life, do something about it!

I have to say, I have a real challenge with the direction that this video might be suggesting.  I am really tired of the medical community telling people that their answer is in a bottle or syringe.  That is a load of crap!

People, if we would take the responsibility for this pandemic we could get it under control in a few years.  I am not kidding!

Truth be told, the great majority of people that have challenges with their weight, created the issue themselves by making chronically bad decisions over a long period of time.  Those people need to start making the right decisions the majority of the time and they can get their health back.  Yes, they can!

I hope you enjoyed the post, and if you did please pass it on with a “share” or “like.”

Any comments?

Have You Implemented Exercise Into Your Healthy Lifestyle?

So, you are interested in optimal health huh?

Wondering how you might get the feat done with little to no work?

Sorry… this isn’t possible!

If you won’t move… do NOT expect to improve your health.

Have you implemented exercise into your healthy lifestyle?  If not, your lifestyle is NOT healthy!

Here is a nice little short list of some of the benefits of a proper exercise regimen:

  1. Improved Weight Management (Weight Loss and Weight Gain)
  2. Improved Short Term And Long Term Health (Illnesses and Degenerative Diseases)
  3. Improved Mobility (Flexibility and Proper Range Of Motion)
  4. Improved Sleep Patterns (Quality and Quantity)
  5. Improved Mental Acuity (Brain Function and Memory)

It is clear, the benefits of a proper exercise program are AMAZING!  And, please don’t think gymnasium or athletic club when you think “exercise program” as you can get all of the exercise you need in and around your home.

Look, exercise doesn’t have to burdensome.

Look, exercise doesn’t even have to be boring.

But, some type of highly efficient exercise NEEDS to be implemented into your everyday life!

Here is a nice little article that breaks down how a safe and effective exercise program will benefit the aging.  Wait… that is ALL of us!

Have You Implemented Exercise Into Your Healthy Lifestyle?

have you implemented exercise into your healthy lifestyle?

Have you implemented exercise into your healthy lifestyle? Okay, NOT this type of exercise!

As we age, it becomes increasingly important to remain active. Research has shown that regular exercise helps boost energy, elevate mood, increase memory, and manage symptoms of illness or pain. The benefits are amazing.

First, exercise helps with weight. Metabolism naturally slows with age, but exercise can increase metabolism and build muscle mass, which burns more calories.

Second, exercise reduces the impact of illness and chronic disease. Seniors who exercise experience improved immune function, better heart health and blood pressure, greater bone density, and better digestive functioning. They also have a lowered risk of chronic conditions including diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, and colon cancer.

Third, exercise enhances mobility, flexibility, balance and coordination, which reduces the risk of falls. The NIH reports that hospitals in the U.S. register 300,000 admissions for broken hips each year, many of them seniors, and falling is often the cause.

Fourth, exercise improves sleep, helping people fall asleep more quickly and sleep more deeply. Fifth, exercise boosts mood. Endorphins produced by exercise can reduce feelings of sadness or depression and boost self-confidence.

And, finally, exercise benefits regular brain functions. Keeping the brain active can prevent memory loss, cognitive decline, and dementia. It may even help slow the progression of brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s.

You can find the entire article HERE

There is no area of your being that a proper exercise regimen will NOT benefit.

  • Not feeling well?
  • Not thinking well?
  • Not sleeping well?
  • Not moving well?
  • Not performing well?
  • Not living well?

The list goes on and on!

I hope that this post encourages you to improve your daily movement patterns so you can start receiving the benefit of proper exercise.

Have you implemented exercise into your healthy lifestyle?  If not, know that there is nothing healthy about not moving on a daily basis!

If you have been looking for a place for help in improving your health, “The Get Healthy Club” might be the place for you.  And, it includes proper exercise with your very own personal trainer (as well as nutritionist and lifestyle coach)!

Well, that was fun!

If you have a friend or loved one that might benefit from knowing more about the benefits of a safe and effective exercise program please pass it on!

When It Comes To Weight Loss Is The Law Of Thermodynamics Working For You?

When it comes to attaining optimal health, people should know that it can be “simple” but it won’t necessarily “easy.”

This becomes more than obvious when people try to get to their “supposed” healthy weight.

This is where things are not easy, and can even seem a little complicated!

When it comes to weight loss is the Law Of Thermodynamics working for you?

To be fair, the only reason it is complicated is that the human body has a few mechanisms that “help” it hold onto body-fat.  This shouldn’t be too surprising!

Why?  Because the human body wants to “survive” and NOT get “lean.”  So, when you eat and move the idea is to “live” and not “look great.”

The nice thing about this is that we know a lot of the road blocks that the body will put up when it comes to weight loss and there are a number of way to “blast” through them.

Guess what?  Cutting a huge amount of calories is NOT one of them!

Let’s take a look at a short article that makes the case against relying on the Law Of Thermodynamics being your primary approach to weight loss.

When it comes to weight loss is the Law Of Thermodynamics working for you?

when it comes to weight loss is the law of thermodynamics working for you

When it comes to weight loss is the Law Of Thermodynamics working for you?

As a health professional, I owe it to you to give you the truth!  (and, unfortunately, I am finding that the “mainstream” media isn’t helping!)

And the truth is this… basing weight loss, let alone good health, on the “Calorie In/Calorie Out” Myth supposedly explained by the “Law of Thermodynamics” is just plain WRONG!

I mean, it is beyond wrong, it is IDIOTIC!  And, it is DANGEROUS.

Hopefully, if you didn’t before,  you now have a good idea where I stand on the “Calorie In/Calorie Out” Myth.

In case you are wondering WHY I am so upset with the Calorie In/Calorie “Movement,” let me spend the next three posts on giving you a better idea.

Here is an example of MOST conversations between trainers and their clients in gyms all across the United States:

TRAINER:  “You didn’t lose any weight this week, how come?”
CLIENT:  “I have no idea, I ate all the proper amounts of food and did all of the workouts that you asked of me.”
TRAINER:  “That is impossible.  If you ate what I told you to and you did all of the workouts, you would AT LEAST lose two pounds a week.  You would have to because you would have created a caloric deficit of 7000 calories!”
CLIENT:  “Well, is there any way that the human body doesn’t work that way?”
TRAINER:  “No.  It is a law.  And the law is called the “Law of Thermodynamics.”  You didn’t lose weight because you ate too much and you didn’t workout hard enough.  It is as simple as that.”
CLIENT:  “Okay.  I will eat less this week, plus I will work out more.  Thanks for the advice.   I really appreciate your expertise.”

What expertise?

Expertise in “destroying your health” and “developing emotional and mental trauma”?

Let’s get this straight.

Trying to use the “Laws of Thermodynamics” to explain human biological functions is pure folly.   Scientific laws only apply to laboratory situations where variables are controlled and systems are closed off from all other systems.

The human body is NOT a closed system and our lives DO NOT take place in laboratories. To put it simply, calories are units of heat, not measures of potency.

So, if you are using the Law Of Thermodynamics as your primary approach to weight loss I would suggest you make a change.  Your health may just be depending on it!

Remember, your journey to attain optimal health, and even weight loss, can be “simple” but it won’t be “easy.”

If you are looking for some help in attaining optimal health, or even losing weight (in a safe and effective manner), I recommend you take a look at my on-line Health Club:  The Get Healthy Club.
