<p>When it comes to the “Paleo Diet,” as <a href="http://thegethealthyhub.com/health-or-fiction-lets-talk-about-the-paleo-diet/" target="_blank">I have said before</a>, there are some things I really like and there are some things that really make no sense to me.</p>
<p>First off, I am a huge fan of biochemical individuality and creating an individualized nutritional regimen that is best for every person.  Why?  Because each of us are physiologically special, we are  biologically different and there is no “One-Size-Fits-All,” “Universal,” or even a “Cookie Cutter” diet that will benefit ALL people.  In matter of fact, these approaches to proper nutrition can be just as detrimental to some people’s health as they are beneficial to others.</p>
<p>Today I quickly wanted to point out one very large challenge for the “Paleo Diet” followers.  If you are going to be very specific about your recommendations or your diet plans, you are going to have some issues!</p>
<p>Stick with the basic ideas behind the “Paleo Diet, but be very leery about “specific recommendations.”</p>
<p>I am not the only one that has this concern, please take a look at an excerpt from an article at &#8220;Outlaw Fitness,&#8221; by Josh Vales:  <a href="http://www.outlawfitnesshq.com/the-paleo-diet/" target="_blank">The Paleo Diet</a></p>
<blockquote><p>One of the first holes that comes to mind when I think of the Paleo Diet is the fact that it relies so heavily on things that are unproven, and to-date, unprovable. The Paleo Diet is based on what some experts believe the cavemen ate. They look at historical studies and modern-day hunter-gatherer societies and combine this with a whole lot of theory. But, do we really know what caveman ate? Is there any definitive evidence that details a caveman’s universal dietary menu? The answer, unfortunately, is no. We use conjecture, educated guesses, and speculation, with only hints of science. But science is not made of “probablys” or “quite possiblys”. Rather, it’s proven, reliable, documented, and peer-reviewed. If only Bob the cavemen left his darn cookbook for us.</p></blockquote>
<p>Let’s be clear, if you are focusing on the “Paleo Diet” being the best way to optimal health through proper nutrition, what will that diet look like exactly?</p>
<p>Which region of Hunter-Gatherers are you going to follow?</p>
<p>Africa?<br />
Europe?<br />
Asia?<br />
North America?<br />
Central America?<br />
South America?<br />
The Islands?</p>
<p>To be fair, each of these regions have their own little subgroups where their diets differ significantly from their neighbors.</p>
<p>These people all consumed “wild” animals, fish, and “plants.”  Period.</p>
<p>Depending upon their location, these diets are VERY different.</p>
<p>The article noted above also has some thoughts on this topic as well:</p>
<blockquote><p>Not only is much of what “cavemen” ate is still open to interpretation, but it’s highly location dependent. Just because the cavemen of modern Europe (that the Paleo Diet models itself after) are thought to have consumed a diet relatively high in meat (due to a lack of plant availability), doesn’t mean that early man in other areas of the world didn’t have a vastly different looking diet.<br />
Katharine Milton talks about the !Kung people in an editorial in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. She says that the !Kung, an African people who live in an almost ideal hunter-gatherer environment, live on a diet that consists of approximately 67% plant food, and only 33% animal foods; significantly different than the ideal proportions laid out by the Paleo Diet.<br />
Likewise, hunter-gatherers in other parts of the world like southeast Asia, for example, no doubt had a very different looking diet again. Due to things like geography, weather, and local vegetation and animal life, what was available to the cavemen was likely highly location-dependent.<br />
I can’t stress this enough, as “healthy cultures” can be found around the world have significantly different diets.</p></blockquote>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Why?  Location.  Climate.  Season.  Range Of Travel.  Animals Available.  Plants Available.  Fish Available.</p>
<p>Please, don’t get caught up in the details!</p>
<p>The basics are enough to really clean up your nutritional regimen!</p>
<p>Look, I cannot tell you the primary motivation of those &#8220;pushing&#8221; the Paleo Diet (and all of the &#8220;specifics&#8221; that seem to go with it), but I can tell you that my approach to nutrition primarily benefits two groups:</p>
<p><strong>YOU and Small Farmers.</strong></p>
<p><strong>Yes, your health!</strong></p>
<p><strong>And, the bottom line for the small farmer.</strong></p>
<p><strong>In my opinion, the small farmer that is making an effort to do it right (creating food that improves our health) should be given &#8220;Rock Star&#8221; Status!!!</strong></p>

<p>No, it isn’t a diet.</p>
<p>But, there seems to be a new movement that is creating a diet from the “Hunter-Gatherer” approach to proper nutrition.</p>
<p>I am sure you have heard of it&#8230;</p>
<p>Yes, it is called the “Paleo Diet.”</p>

<p>Am I a fan?  No, not exactly!</p>
<p>But, I must say, I do believe that we have bodies that are still physiologically made for the “Hunter-Gatherer” Era but we find ourselves smack dab in the middle of the “Technology” Era.</p>
<p>This challenge has left us out of sync and our poor health is a major consequence.</p>
<p>That being said, when it comes to improving our health, I do see a lot of good in the approach to the &#8220;Paleo Lifestyle.&#8221;</p>
<p>But, when I start seeing some of the Paleo Diets I have some real concerns.</p>
<p>Here is just a short-list of challenges I have with the Paleo Diet:</p>
<ul>
<li>Far reaching interpretations of the studies and science available.</li>
<li>The importance placed on macro-evolution but not micro-evolution.</li>
<li>The push of supplements, including whey protein, seems extremely hypocritical.</li>
<li>Some glaring disagreements within the “guru” ranks.</li>
</ul>
<p>Here is an excerpt from a recent article (Found on AlterNet, by Jill Richardson) asking some other pertinent questions regarding the Paleo Diet:</p>
<blockquote><p>Needless to say, it’s impossible to accurately lump together the diet of every single human ancestor or even just the Homo sapiens who lived in this period. “The truth of the matter is there is no paleo diet,” summarizes Katharine Milton, a professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at UC-Berkeley. “The only thing you can do is generalize very broadly and you can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that paleo peoples were eating wild plant and animal foods because there was no agriculture and there were no domesticated animals.” A piece in Nature backs her up, showing how difficult it is to reconstruct human diets of the distant past through a variety of means.</p></blockquote>

<p>Many of us struggle with not only tightness in the back of our legs BUT also tightness in the hips.</p>

<p>Below you will find the first installment!</p>
<p>This is one of my favorites and one that I recommend for all of you to take a good hard look at!</p>
